Digitally included or excluded? We did some work with Camden Council that clearly showcased that access to digital exists on a spectrum and explored what can be done about this.

100kicks was commissioned by Camden Council to investigate the issue of digital exclusion among their residents. Our approach involved a short research piece, including desk research and ethnography. Through desk research, we learned that digital exclusion impacts people across age ranges and particularly those on lower incomes. Our 2-week ethnography, conducted in libraries and community spaces across the borough, gave us invaluable insight into how residents experienced digital exclusion. Our approach allowed us to develop a better understanding of the problem and provide actionable recommendations for our client.

At 100kicks, we understand the importance of a flexible framework for digital inclusion, focusing on provision and skills. Through our research, we found that digital inclusion/exclusion exists on a scale, and language plays a significant role, especially for diverse communities like Camden. Our work also revealed the impact of the cost of living crisis, with internet safety emerging as a key issue. Our findings challenged the assumption that only older people are affected by digital exclusion, emphasizing the need for targeted solutions. The council has acted on our recommendations and established a team to work with existing community centers and libraries, ensuring tangible progress in addressing digital exclusion in Camden.
